6 Potential Brain Benefits of Bilingual Education (nprED)

Bilingualism is an experience that shapes our brain for a lifetime…

  • Attention – In many ways, the trick to speaking two languages consists in managing not to speak one of those languages at a given moment, which is fundamentally a feat of paying attention. People who speak two languages often outperform monolinguals on general measures of executive function.
  • Empathy – Young children being raised bilingual have to follow social cues to figure out which language to use with which person and in what settling. As a result, bilingual children have demonstrated a head start on tests of perspective-taking and theory of mind – both of which are fundamental social and emotional skills.
  • Reading (English): Dual-language students outperformed peers in English-reading skills by a full school year’s worth of learning in a study done by Jennifer Steele at American University.
  • School Performance and Engagement: In studies covering six states and 37 districts, Wayne Thomas and Virginia Collier of George Mason University in Virginia have found that, compared with students in English-only classrooms or in one-way immersion, dual-language students have somewhat higher test scores and also seem to be happier in school. Attendance is better, behavioral problems fewer, parent involvement higher.
  • Diversity and Integration: Because dual-immersion programs are composed of native English speakers deliberately placed together with recent immigrants, they tend to be more ethnically and socioeconomically balanced. And there is some evidence that this helps kids of all backgrounds gain comfort with diversity and different cultures.
  • Protection against Cognitive Decline and Dementia: Researchers have found that actively using two languages seems to have a protective effect against age-related dementia — perhaps relating to the changes in brain structure.

Hear From Our Wonderful Parents

“My 4 kids have found phenomenal success through KIP and I couldn’t be more pleased. As a former GATE public high school teacher with a Masters degree in Education, I can see how dual language learning has challenged my kids cognitively and given them insight into culture and a broader world view beyond Orange County.  My oldest son did every possible year at KIP and is now at Brea-Olinda High School, a straight A student.  KIP more than prepared him to study effectively, cultivate a true love for learning and find educational opportunities tailored for his accelerated learning style.  Each of my four kids have unique personalities, and KIP has been able to successfully meet each one where they were at and increase their mastery of every subject at their unique starting levels.  All this while allowing me to have more time with my kids and enjoy the flexibility to pursue their own hobbies and just let the kids be kids in a safe and caring environment.”

I have three kids at KIP. Korean dual immersion was the reason we decided to homeschool. We have been attending since my first child was in TK (7 years). Mrs. Kim and Mrs. Yoon are amazing experienced instructors. My eldest can probably read and speak Korean better than I can. My second is very interested in Korean history and culture as a result of KIP. She has never been to Korea, but daydreams about what she will see, eat, and experience there. One of the best things about a bilingual education is the connection to the older generation. My children are able to understand and communicate directly with their grandparents.

My daughter started KIP as a kindergartner. At that time, she did not know any Korean and could not tell the difference between Korean and Spanish. In the beginning of her KIP journey, she was frustrated at times because she could not understand what was going on in class as it was conducted in Korean, but within a couple of months, I would catch her singing tunes that helped memorize Korean vowel sound as well as nursery rhymes that Korean kids learn in grade school. By the end of first semester, we were pointing out animals, colors, numbers and objects in Korean during our day and high fiving how much she had gained in just a few months of immersion at KIP. As we are nearing the end of our second year at KIP, I can say that it has been a gentle introduction to meeting with other homeschoolers, making memories and growing bilingually and biculturally through learning and fun.
