How to Independent Study with a Charter

Today, home education is the fastest-growing form of education in the United States, with approximately 3.7 million homeschool-educated students across the country in the fall of 2020. In California and nationwide, homeschooling has increased roughly 90% over the last ten years. One way to homeschool unique to California is by enrolling in an independent study program charter.

An independent study program charter is a *free, public charter school program where each family is assigned a credentialed teacher (Educational Facilitator/Teacher of Record) and together create a customized learning plan.  Each charter program provides instructional funds that are used to support each individualized learning plan. Each month, a learner must provide a work plan and samples to show growth and hit milestones. Korean Immersion Program (KIP) is a vendor for iLEAD Exploration and Excel Academy. The assigned credential teacher directs funding toward the program.

How do I sign up?

Register your learner with iLEAD Exploration or Excel Academy. You can contact noneill@excelacademy.education or rebecca.park@ileadexploration.org if you have any further questions. Although you can sign up with any Educational Facilitator/Teacher of Record, you’ll find Nikki O’Neill and Rebecca Park have the most experience with this program. Register for KIP separately here!

What is required of me?

In order to be in compliance with the charter school (iLEAD or Excel), students must meet with their credentialed teacher each learning period (Every 20 days on zoom or in person), upload work samples (1 work sample per core subject) and take standardized tests.

*Some out of pocket costs such as lunch fee, textbooks and materials.
